about me and the blog
Background
I honestly never had much interest in cosmetics for many years. It seemed like anything I tried out--toners, foundations, special scrubs--made my skin worse than normal. Plus, coming from a science and journalism background, I found the over-hyped, unscientific and market talk surrounding cosmetics highly icky. So, I stuck with Dove soap and Clinique moisturizer until recently.
As a transplant to a super sunny climate (Southern California), as well as a recent entrant into the mid-30s, I realized my happy-go-lucky skincare routine would need an upgrade.
Couple that with a recent trip to Seoul, South Korea where I was introduced to "kbeauty" cosmetics and an obsession was born! South Korea is said to be a decade or more ahead of U.S. cosmetics (potentially in part because of government funding) and the high quality and sheer variety of products available seems to confirm that.
For once, I was encountering products that weren't "all talk and no walk," renewing my interest in skin care and prompting me to take a deeper dive into the science behind cosmetics. I share what I learn on this blog.

rating Scale explained! At the bottom of most of my product posts, you'll see a rating of the product and experience listed from 1-3. Below is the Rating Scale explained: 3 – “Shut up and take my money!" The science is relatively sound for this product (as much as it can be in the cosmetic industry) and/or my particular experience was so satisfactory it immediately became part of my daily skincare routine. 2 – “Decent enough to buy again, especially if it's on sale.” Though the science is inconclusive or “lite”, my anecdotal experience with this product was good enough to personally recommend this product. 1 - “Wish I could turn back time and get my money back." I would would not go out of my way to buy it due to its average or below-average ingredients and experience. |
